What is the job of a Home Based Educator?

• home and environment that meets Ministry of Education health and safety requirements
• desire to inspire and support tamariki to learn through daily experiences

• commitment to creating a positive difference for tamariki and their whānau
• willingness to build and maintain connections with whānau and the community
• understanding of what it means to be self-employed
Am I employed by Barnardos Early Learning?
Home Based Educators are self-employed and contracted to Barnardos to provide home based care and education for children. Barnardos Home Based Educators are paid according to the terms stated in their Independent Educators Agreement. They have no direct employment relationship with Barnardos. What support do I receive from Barnardos Early Learning?
We support our educators to learn and succeed through:
• initial induction and ongoing support from qualified, certificated, and experienced early childhood teachers and other Barnardos staff
• regular visits and phone support from a Visiting Teacher
• arranging and guiding you through match ups with whānau and tamariki
• supporting you with your marketing, and any events to promote your business
• mentoring from your Visiting Teacher if undertaking a Level 4 NZQA ECE qualification
• organising and paying for your first aid certificate
• providing learning resources & equipment such as cots and buggies
• organising learning opportunities (where able) away from the immediate home environment, including playgroups and/or group excursions
• supplying marketing material, such as fence signs, vests, bags, and individual profiles
• ongoing professional learning and development workshops
• access to Storypark and other online tools
• being part of a caring, skilled, and passionate team of professionals
Do I need a formal qualification?
If you don’t have a required Early Childhood qualification, once you have joined Barnardos Early Learning your Visiting Teacher will support you to complete the NZQA Level 4 ECE qualification. This is a Ministry of Education requirement, and you can have tamariki enrolled in your service whilst you work towards this.
What type of training do you provide?
We will take you through our induction process to ensure you understand what is expected of you as a professional Barnardos Early Learning Home Based Educator including health and safety requirements.
How many children can I have in my care?
The maximum number of children you can have in your care at one time is four, with a maximum of two under 2-years-olds. If you have your own tamariki under the age of 6 years at home (not enrolled in school), they will be included in this number.
Am I required to share the child’s learning with their family?
Yes, through daily conversations with whānau as well as documenting the learning and development of tamariki through stories in Pukapuka (book portfolio) and/or on Storypark (online portfolio). Whānau are encouraged to contribute to these.
Do I need a first aid certificate?
All home based educators must have a current first aid certificate. If you do not have one Barnardos Early Learning will pay for you to complete this.
What are my potential earnings?
You can earn as much as you want to as you set the days and hours you are available as well as the hourly rate. Barnardos Early learning will be able to provide you with a general guide to what is charged locally but be aware that this will vary between educators depending on different factors.
For tamariki over 3 years old claiming 20 hours ECE*, the Barnardos Early Learning pass through rate from Ministry of Education is $6 per hour if you are qualified.
**MOE conditions apply.
Do I have to stay at home with the children all the time or can we go out into the local community?
For home based services excursions, connections with the community and other Educators, and local outings are an important aspect of providing learning opportunities away from the immediate home environment. You work with your Visiting Teacher to plan local excursions like visits to the library, to music classes, or anything else that might be relevant in your area.
Do I pay tax?
You will manage you own payment for tax; however, the good news is that there is a tax break, and you do not pay tax on the first $4.45 per hour*.
Barnardos Early Learning will give you an annual statement of earnings to assist you with your tax obligations.
*This is the rate as of 2024 however it changes yearly.
You are responsible for ensuring that you are aware of and understand your tax obligations and the Inland Revenue Determination DET 09/02 Standard-Cost Household Service for Childcare Providers, any and amendments or successors to this Determination.
Do I need to be police vetted or have reference checks?
Home Based Educators fall under the Children’s Act 2014, therefore you and any other persons aged 17 years or older who live in, or regularly visit your home require police vetting.
How many hours do I need to work?
This is up to you. One of the benefits of being a Home Based Educator is that you get to choose the days and hours you are available, working with your own families to find what suits you and your lifestyle best.
However, we advise Educators to work at least 20 hours per week and be prepared to be flexible depending on needs of tamariki and whānau.
How do I get paid?
Barnardos Early Learning use a free online tool called ‘EzyPay’ which invoices your parents, and a direct credit is paid to you weekly.
Does Barnardos Early Learning provide any start up resources or payments?
As you work through your induction, we will provide you with some learning resources and equipment such as cots and buggies to help you get started.
Does an educator follow a curriculum like Early learning Centres, and do I get to plan my day?
All Home Based Educators follow New Zealand’s Early Childhood Curriculum - Te Whāriki. Your Visiting Teacher will support you as you learn how to plan your days to enhance and support the learning and development of tamariki and record that learning.
How do I get children?
Our Community Coordinators will support you to market your service through digital and social
media campaigns and local marketing activity.
What office equipment do I need to run my business?
You will need a computer, access to a printer, mobile phone, and access to the internet. This will be to print
off any forms and resources for your families and children.
Is there paper work involved?
