Meet our Home Based Educator Tasmina Kazi

Tasmina’s journey into early childhood education started with her own childhood experiences. Growing up in Bangladesh, she often cared for her younger cousins, sparking a love for caregiving.

“My mum was a head teacher and I remember crying whenever she left for work,” she recalls. “I always wished I could be with her.” That memory stayed with her, shaping her dream of balancing work and family while following her passion for providing quality care for children.

In 2003, Tasmina moved to Australia and became a high school teacher before settling in New Zealand in 2006. When she discovered Barnardos Home Based Service, she knew it was the perfect fit. “That was when the idea clicked – I could spend time with my child at home while also following my passion.”

A journey of growth with Barnardos

Starting with just one child in her care alongside her own son, Tasmina realised it was going to be tough at first but she was willing to do anything to pursue her career as an educator. “At the beginning, I didn’t feel comfortable and struggled a bit because English was my second language,” she admits. “But Barnardos supported me throughout the years, encouraging me and building my confidence up.” Determined to provide the best care possible, she pursued further studies and completed her Level 5 Certificate in Early Childhood Education.

Her home based setting has since become a special space where tamariki flourish. One family even returned to her after trying a centre-based setting, realising the warm, personalised environment of Tasmina’s home based service suited their child best.

“What I love most is seeing tamariki grow and develop under my guidance. Whether it’s climbing a slide for the first time, building with blocks, or figuring out a new toy – watching their confidence grow is the best reward.”

Tasmina’s home based service

Each day in Tasmina’s home based is filled with diverse activities. “We do puzzles, playdough, water play, sandpit fun – there’s always something exciting happening, no matter the weather.” She also ensures to celebrate key dates like Diwali and Matariki, and encourages tamariki to share their own traditions.

Tasmina values the relationships she builds, not just with tamariki but also with their whānau. “I love getting to know families, I even learn from them and I share some of my teachings with them too.”

Her dedication has created a ripple effect in the community, with families continuously referring new whānau to her home based service. “Many parents share positive feedback about my home based and even refer people they know looking for childhood education options. I feel very privileged that they do that.”
