Celebrating Children’s Day | Te Rā o Ngā Tamariki

Children’s Day, Te Rā o Ngā Tamariki, is a special moment in Aotearoa to celebrate the incredible tamariki in our lives. It is a day to pause, connect, and recognise children for who they are, their uniqueness, their potential, and the joy they bring to our whānau and communities.

At Barnardos Early Learning, this day reflects what we value every day. Tamariki are at the heart of everything we do.

A day of connection and celebration

Across our centres and communities, Children’s Day 2026 was filled with laughter, creativity, and shared experiences.

In Porirua, our teams joined whānau at Ngāti Toa Domain for a vibrant community celebration. With the sun shining and smiles all around, tamariki enjoyed games on the grass, creative activities like making Easter cards, and quality time with their families. It was a beautiful reminder of how powerful it is when whānau and community come together to celebrate children.

In Ōtautahi, our Barnardos tent was proudly set up at Cuthberts Green, where we celebrated Whakapapa, honouring the identity, stories, and connections each child carries with them. Throughout the day, we embraced Whakawhanaungatanga, strengthening relationships with whānau and the wider community. Tamariki engaged in kēmu (games), laughter filled the air, and meaningful kōrero was shared about our Early Learning and Home Based services. Hearing positive feedback from whānau about their experiences with Barnardos was truly heartwarming.

Within our centres, Children’s Day was also marked with special moments together. Tamariki gathered on the mat to sing, dance, and explore activities side by side before sharing lunch as a group. These simple yet meaningful moments reflected the joy of being together and celebrating each other.

Children’s Day is a reminder that tamariki are taonga. They deserve to feel seen, valued, heard, and celebrated.

The day aligns closely with our commitment to Whakapapa and Whakawhanaungatanga. We recognise that every child comes with their own identity and story, and that strong, nurturing relationships with whānau and community are essential to their wellbeing and growth.

While Children’s Day is one dedicated moment in the year, the values it represents guide us every day. We strive to create environments where tamariki feel a strong sense of belonging, where their voices matter, and where whānau are welcomed as partners in learning.
