Make your own playdough
Playdough has been a much-loved activity for generations — and for good reason.
It is simple to make, fun to use, and offers endless learning opportunities for tamariki. As they roll, squish, and shape the dough, they are exploring with all their senses, building fine motor skills, and letting their creativity shine.

In early learning, playdough is more than just play. It can help tamariki:
• Develop coordination and hand strength
• Focus their attention and stay engaged
• Express ideas and imagination
• Explore early maths and science concepts like weight, shape, and measurement
• Share ideas and work alongside others
In Te Whāriki, this kind of open-ended sensory play supports multiple strands. Tamariki grow confidence in and control over their bodies (Mana aotūroa – Exploration), learn to express their ideas and stories (Mana reo – Communication), and often find a sense of calm and safety in the familiar routines of play (Mana atua – Wellbeing). Playdough can also nurture a sense of belonging as tamariki share tools, ideas, and conversations with others (Mana whenua – Belonging).
Our downloadable Make your own playdough resource includes both a classic recipe and a full gluten free recipe, along with ideas for encouraging learning through play. Whether you are an early childhood kaiako, parent, or caregiver, it is a great way to bring creativity and sensory play into your day.
