How Home Based Educators support learning, not just care
When many people think of Home Based Early Learning, they imagine someone simply minding children while parents are away. At Barnardos Early Learning, we know the reality is very different. Our Home Based Educators are trained, supported, and intentional in their practice. They create rich, meaningful early learning experiences in a calm, home environment where tamariki feel safe, secure, and ready to learn.
Home Based Early Learning offers the best of both worlds – a warm, familiar home environment combined with high-quality early education. With small group sizes (of no more than four tamariki) our Educators build strong, responsive relationships providing personalised care and tailoring learning to your child’s unique needs.
Children experience the comfort of home while engaging in rich learning opportunities. They have time to explore indoors and outdoors, take part in everyday routines, and connect with their local community through outings and real world experiences. For parents, this offers peace of mind knowing your child is safe, nurtured, and thriving in an environment that feels like home.
Learning through play
Every day, our Home Based Educators plan experiences that truly reflect the interests, strengths, and needs of the tamariki in their care, sparking joy and nurturing development. Guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s early learning curriculum, we know that the best learning happens through play, relationships, and everyday moments.
Play is so much more than fun – it's the foundation for growth. Through play, children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually, helping them build confidence, curiosity, and a deep sense of belonging.
Observation and documentation
As a parent, you want to feel connected to your child’s learning journey – every step of the way. Our Home Based Educators don’t just care for tamariki, they carefully observe how your child plays, explores, and interacts, using these insights to plan learning experiences that support each child’s growth and next steps.
Learning is documented through photos, notes, and learning stories, where you will gain insight into your child’s progress over time. This shared approach supports strong partnerships with whānau and ensures learning is visible, meaningful, and aligned with Te Whāriki.
Support you can count on
No Home Based Educator works alone. At Barnardos Early Learning, our Visiting Teachers provide expert guidance, share ideas, and support planning to ensure every child enjoys quality learning experiences.
Educators also receive training and mentoring, including the opportunity to study for the Open Polytechnic Early Childhood Certificate (Level 4) at no cost. Visiting Teachers regularly visit Educators in their homes, offering professional advice, reviewing learning documentation, and ensuring the highest standards of care and education for your child.
A professional, rewarding career
Being a Home Based Educator is a skilled, professional role. It requires creativity, intentionality, and a genuine passion for nurturing young learners. It’s more than babysitting – it’s about inspiring a love of learning, forming strong, trusting relationships, and making a lasting difference in the lives of tamariki and their whānau.
At Barnardos Early Learning our Home Based Educators provide so much more than care. They create purposeful early learning experiences, naturally grow strong and trusting relationships, and offer nurturing environments where tamariki can thrive.
It’s early learning that feels just like home – combined with the reassurance of expert guidance and the strength of a trusted professional team.
